"...this is why telling
people to study more,
does not necessarily
help"
Dr.
Marty Lobdell.
NO! says Dr. Marty Lobdell;
former Psychology Professor at Pierce College in Washington State: USA. Now,
this isn’t just a random opinion, it is the common knowledge of experts. If you
have ever had trouble remembering what you read, you are not alone
When students fail, telling
them to study harder does not help. This is because the time spent studying was
not the cause of the problem to begin with. It might actually help to study
"softer". This is advice that might sound strange to you, and for
good reason. However, it is far from heresy, so before you stone me to
death…hear me out.
As a Nigerian I’m assuming
that you take a "do or die" approach to almost everything. OKAY,
maybe you don’t, but I’d bet that you admire people who do! There is nothing
wrong with this mentality in most cases...after all, better grades equals
prestige, if not better job opportunities. This is Nigeria, and that is our
reality. Nigerians are expected to be “hustlers” to the exact degree that the
word “hustler” means someone who is driven and down to earth, who does whatever
it takes, to achieve his aims. Ultimately, someone who is not afraid of hard or
stressful work.
However, in matters of
academics, better results come from smarter work, not harder work. In fact, as
an intellectual, difficulty is a sign that you are not doing it right!
As humans, our superior
intelligence allows us to stay at the top of the food chain. We own the planet.
Tigers and whales, are fierce and enormous, but they are going extinct anyways.
By comparison, humans are overpopulated. As a species, we do not struggle to
dominate other animals, we simply do. Its effortless. We pick up language at an
early age, it’s almost miraculous. As a toddler, you progressed from crawling
to walking within the space of a few weeks. You have abundant mental resources.
Now, here is the strange thing: when you are staring down at a book that has 2000 pages and weighs 10kg, you feel overwhelmed. The entire paragraph above, begins to look like so much motivational speech. You are sure that there is no way you can read this book, from cover to cover…or is there?
ACING EASY: is a stress-free guide that helps you achieve the result of your dreams. Studying in a Nigerian university does not have to be stressful, if you know
